How to get rid of dandruff or dry scalp

There are many people who suffer from dandruff problems. Dandruff is a commonly occurring condition of the scalp characterized by flaky skin. It has many causes, excessively dry or oily skin, inflamed skin (dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis), fungal infection, overuse, or underuse of hair products like shampoo, hair spray, gel. It isn’t contagious and rarely leads to or signifies anything serious, but it’s often embarrassing. Fortunately, there are some measures you can adopt to get rid of it.

Use Natural Home Remedies

Apply yogurt as a natural conditioner: Plain yogurt without added any sugar is a good skin conditioner. Consider using if for your scalp if it feels itchy or inflamed. Natural contains protein and lactic acid that offers nourishment that hair needs for growth and health.
• Apply yogurt in your scalp for 30 minutes, then wash your hair with a mild shampoo. It will also make your hair softer.

Get Aloe Vera gel massage: Aloe has anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties that make aloe an excellent natural dandruff treatment; rub a generous amount of Aloe Vera gel directly into your scalp and remain up to 1 hour, and then wash your hair with a mild shampoo and rinse your hair and scalp thoroughly.
• You can collect Aloe Vera gel directly from the cut leaf of live aloe Vera plant or purchase it.
• Stop using Aloe Vera gel if you are experiencing itching, rash, or irritation.

Use coconut oil: Try coconut oil treatment to reduce inflammation and add moisture. Coconut oil has anti-fungal properties and fatty acids, which is essential for hair growth.
• Use coconut oil, rub two tablespoons of oil directly into your scalp and let it sit 5-10 minutes before rinsing.
• You can also put oil in your hair overnight and wash it with warm water in the morning.

Use diluted lemongrass oil: Lemongrass oil possesses antimicrobial and antiviral properties; it effectively relieves dry scalp and dandruff.
• Get a 10% lemongrass oil shampoo, or add a few drops of lemongrass oil to your shampoo or conditioner.
• You may need to use lemongrass oil treatment for 2-3 weeks for better results. Don’t apply undiluted lemongrass oil directly into your scalp; it may irritate.

Shampoo with tea tree oil: Tea tree oil has antiseptic, antibiotics, and anti-fungal properties. Scrub it into your scalp, let the oil soak in for a few minutes, and then rinse well. If any infection causes dandruff, then tea tree oil shampoos and other products may be beneficial.

Seeking Medical Treatment

Get medical treatment if your dandruff doesn’t respond to home care: If home treatment isn’t helping, you may have heavy dandruff or itching and discomfort, so it may be time to see a doctor. They can identify the cause and prescribe an appropriate treatment.
• For persistent fungal infection of the scalp, your doctor might prescribe an anti-fungal shampoo or medication.
• If your dandruff is caused by inflammatory disease, a corticosteroid treatment or immune response inhibitor might help.

Seek medical attention if you have a weak immune system: If you have a disease such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, cancer, or inherited immune deficiency disorder, that weakens your immune system. Then you should call your doctor.

Add aspirin tablets in shampoo: Aspirin contains salicylic acid; it is a common ingredient in dandruff treatment. It can help reduce inflammation.
• Try crushing 1-2 uncoated aspirin tablets and mixing them with one tablespoon your shampoo, shampoo your hair as usual and leave the shampoo on your hair for 2-3 minutes before rinsing it out.
• You can also purchase salicylic acid containing shampoo.
Stop this treatment, if you experience
• irritation, redness, burning, or any sign of allergic reactions.

Use a zinc pyrithione shampoo: It is an anti-bacterial and antifungal agent. It can reduce any fungal infection on your scalp that may be causing your dandruff due to seborrheic dermatitis.

Change your diet

 Consume Omega-3 fatty acids foods: If you struggle with dandruff, try eating more food rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as seafood fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna), nuts, seeds, and seed oils. This food may improve your skin as well as hair’s health.
• You can also take Omega-3 fatty acids supplements such as fish oils tablets.

Eat more vegetables and fruits: Scalp can also be caused by a deficiency of nutrients such as Vitamin B, zinc, and healthy fatty acids.
• Eat green leafy vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and peas, beans, and colorful veggies like carrot, peppers, radishes.
• You can also get a number of minerals and vitamins by eating various fruits like berries, apples, citrus, bananas, grapes, kiwifruit, and melons.

Consume biotin-rich foods: Biotin is an essential B Vitamin that can improve hair, skin, and nails. Biotin rich foods include egg yolk, salmon, nuts, liver, nutritional yeast like butter, cheese, and creamy soups.

Consume zinc from the diet: Zinc is an essential dietary mineral that helps keep your immunity strong; it may also promote faster healing and help prevent a condition that affects your skin, hair, and scalp.
• Get zinc from dietary sources such as egg, dairy products, red meat, shellfish, nuts, seeds, whole grains, potatoes.
• You can also get zinc supplements as prescribed by your doctor.
